Going virtually

AR and VR technologies have the potential to revolutionize the education and training of future endodontics. Traditional methods often rely on textbooks, lectures, and hands-on experiences using extracted teeth. However, AR and VR can offer immersive learning experiences which motivate dental students to learn root canal anatomy.

Imagine dental students donning VR headsets and being transported into a virtual environment where they can explore intricate root canal systems and examine dental anatomy. This interactive approach not only enhances their understanding but also instills confidence in tackling real-life clinical challenges.

Tooth Anatomy Inspector

With the gracious backing of the ESE through the Annual Education Grant, an innovative application has been developed with a primary focus on learning root canal anatomy. This application is versatile, being compatible with both smartphones/tablets and VR-headsets, thus catering to various technological preferences. It functions as both a straightforward 2D application and an immersive 3D experience, seamlessly integrating Augmented and Virtual Reality functionalities.

This  application ushers in an engaging methodology for dental students to grasp the intricacies of root canal anatomy. The incorporation of interactive elements facilitates a dynamic learning process, allowing students to explore and comprehend the subject matter more effectively. By leveraging this cutting-edge tool, students can navigate through virtual representations of root canal structures, thus enhancing their spatial understanding and enabling a deeper comprehension of the subject matter.

We are delighted to announce the release of this application to the endodontic community. Currently, the application is readily downloadable for Android devices, and we are excited to announce that it will soon be accessible on iOS devices, as well as on the latest PICO VR-headsets, later in the year. To receive timely updates about the availability of the application for your specific device, we encourage you to subscribe to our newsletter.

We eagerly look forward to your valuable feedback. Your insights are invaluable to us, and we wholeheartedly welcome your various opinions on the application's functionality and your suggestions on how to improve it. Please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and help us refine and improve the application to better cater to the needs of users like you. Your contribution plays a pivotal role in shaping the future development of this educational tool.

It's not the end of the road

We have strong hopes that the application will be appreciated by the endodontic community as a reliable teaching tool. Therefore, we firmly believe that viewing this application as a dynamic, evolving project is the most fitting approach. The version we are presenting today represents just the current state of affairs. We extend a warm invitation to the entire educational community to become a part of this project, working together to further develop the application on a collaborative path. The potential for growth and improvement is immense.

For instance, one significant avenue for expansion is to diversify the range of teeth included in the application. This can be achieved as soon as institutions or individuals are willing to contribute their µCT data of teeth. We are sincerely grateful for any level of engagement and contribution. Simply drop us a quick message to express your interest.

Let's work together to harness the full potential of this project and make it an invaluable resource for the entire endodontic community.
